Oct 15, Currently Reading

Here's what's currently on my bedside table (or rather beside my nursing chair;)

Unbuttoned: Women Open Up About the Pleasures, Pains, and Politics of Breastfeeding edited by Maureen Connolly and Dana Sullivan

This book is a collection of essays written by twenty-five different women about their breastfeeding experiences. It includes stories of women who loved breastfeeding, women who felt indifferent about breastfeeding, stories of adoptive mothers and babies, and the politics of working/pumping and breastfeeding. Some stories are humorous some are sad, some are empowering. Many of the stories seemed to be anti-breastfeeding, but then I realized that these are just women sharing their experiences in a culture that makes it very difficult to breastfeed successfully.

Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus: The Classic Guide to Understanding the Opposite Sex

I was a little skeptical at first, but have been blown away by how accurate John Gray is (at least in describing my relationship;). He gives you the theory to understand yourself, your partner, and why you might be having relationship troubles. He then provides some really good tools for making things better. I read this in conjunction with Why Mars and Venus Collide: Improving Relationships by Understanding How Men and Women Cope Differently with Stress.

What No One Tells the Mom: Surviving the Early Years of Parenthood With Your Sanity, Your Sex Life and YourSense of Humor Intact

I'm in the middle of reading this one. Written with humor and candor Marg Stark tells it like it is! She talks about how motherhood is not how you thought it would be (it's a lot
harder!) and how it's okay to settle for less than perfect in mothering, marriage, and your everyday life.

Oct 2, Homebirth Denounced by The Today Show

On Septeber 11th The Today Show presented a misleading and one-sided show implying that homebirth is a dangerous and irresponsible choice for women.

The show called "The Perils of Homebirth" featured the McKenzies whose baby girl was stillborn after a long labor at home. They are apparently blaming their daughter's death on the fact that they were at home with a midwife whom they trusted and who did not tell them to go to the hospital.

The fact is that these types of deaths happen in the hospital as well. There may be a healthy heartbeat one moment and then not the next. The baby may be still born without any warning or doctors and medical professionals may miss the warning.

Losing a baby regardless of place of birth is a terrible terrible thing.

Being in the hospital is no guarantee of a live baby. In birth as in life THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES!

For healthy women with healthy babies giving birth at home is just as safe as giving birth in the hospital. Homebirth should not be sensationalized and demonized.

NBC did have a clip of Marsden Wagner talking about the excessive c-section rate and they did have a clip of a family who had had a successful homebirth. They also did point out the figures from the 2005 homebirth study. This study showed fewer deaths in the homebirth group than in the hospital group.

But with the sensationalized story of the McKenzies the feeling you come away with is that you would never want to have a homebirth--that a homebirth would be putting your baby in danger.

Wouldn't it be great if as a result of the protests they receive that NBC would air another show interviewing midwives and homebirth families and show how homebirth is actually one of the most responsible choices you can make?

Please sign the petition in response to the Today Show's segment titled "The Perils of Home Birth" - the final petition will be presented to the producers of the Today Show next week...

Aug 26, The Birth of My Baby in Pictures

I have deliberated back and forth over whether I should share my birth photos with you. I worried about whether my readers would be turned off by it or that maybe it was showing too much of my vulnerability. I have decided to share them for the following reasons:

so you can see what natural, normal, ordinary birth is like.

so you can see the variety of positions that I labored in.

By providing this level of vulnerability you will know some of the most wonderful and intimate moments of my life and understand that, yes, I have been there.

A picture is truly worth a thousand words--you will see what I could never describe (although honestly even pictures or video could never capture the true essence of the experience.)

If you don't want to see the author of this website giving birth than please don't continue! If you do choose to read and view, my sincere desire for you is that it will cause you to decide on homebirth or will cement your homebirth plans.

For how we give birth not only profoundly affects our babies, it profoundly affects us forever as women. How we give birth affects our families and our cultures.

How we give birth affects the world.
