Pregnancy and Birth Resources
Here are some pregnancy and birth resources that I have found helpful and inspiring.
Stand and Deliver
is a blog created by Rixa in which she discusses pregnancy and birth, homebirth, midwifery, and mothering. Rixa did her doctoral dissertation on unassisted childbirth called Born Free: Unassisted Childbirth in North America. Her blog provides a very educated view of birth and the state of birth in North America. Rixa also makes ring slings--Second Womb Slings--which you can find through the link on her blog.

(Formerly) Breast and Belly
blog by Joy (same name as mine--different person), takes a gutsy and raw look at her own journey through motherhood with all of its struggles and triumphs. She doesn't gloss over or sweep under the rug the challenges she has faced in giving birth, and mothering. Breast and Belly provides a refreshing viewpoint as an antidote to any of the syrupy sweet stuff you may find out there about mothering.Joy is in the midst of retooling her blog, but as of right now the above link should still take you to the correct web address...

Ecstatic Birth
is a website created by Binnie Dansby, a natural childbirth educator and clinical hypnotherapist. Binnie recommends breathwork and releasing fear as keys to an ecstatic birth experience. She believes that our lives, as well as our babies' births, can be transformed by acknowledging the effects of our own conception, gestation, and birth. She provides guided visualizations, meditations, books, and DVDs to help you achieve a gentle, ecstatic birth.

The Pregnant Earth
is a website created by Barbara Getrost--an artist that celebrates and honors the womb and the form of the pregnant woman. Barbara features her own art as well as that of other artists that depict pregnancy. Beautiful and inspiring! It is especially affirming in our culture that recognizes only thin and small as the standard of beauty.

Spinning Babies
is a website about optimal fetal positioning--in other words helping your baby to get into the best position to be born. Midwife Gail Tully details many different exercises and techniques that you can use to encourage your baby to settle into a head down anterior position. She discusses inversions, rebozo "sifting", and pelvic rocking. I used these techniques when I was pregnant and found them not only helpful, but also relaxing. A must-read site!

Heather Cushman-Dowdee a.k.a., Hathor the Cow Goddess, is a mother of four, a natural birth/breastfeeding/natural parenting activist, and an artist. Her inspiring comics at
The Cow Goddess,
boldly and humorously state her views. A fun and uplifting read! You can also check out her other website at www.mama-is.com
